Reflections

[National Archives and Records Administration]

Nearly 9,000 North Carolinians died in World War II. Survivors returned home to rebuild their lives and start their families in hopes their children would never have to go through another war. Chuck Paty felt that World War II was so awful, there was no way it could happen again. In spite of the years that have passed, many memories remain – memories that the veterans share. They also reflect on war and what they feel it accomplishes. Bill Henderson still doesn’t like to talk about his experiences in World War II, but says he shared his story in hopes it will help younger generations understand the price that been paid for their freedom.
